How to copy/install Ubuntu operating system to a new ESXi virtual machine?

I created a new Virtual Machine on ESXi 3.5 U4 "Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop."  The Ubuntu ISO image resides on the client box's CD/DVD drive.  I can't find on the VMware Infrastructure Client an option to "copy" or "install" the Ubuntu operating system to the new VM.

How do I copy/install the Ubuntu operating system to the new VM?

What you do is go into the new VM's 'Edit Settings' area (rt-click on VM -> Edit Settings), and change the CD/DVD device to 'Client Device'. Make sure 'Connected' and 'Connect at power on' is checked. Reboot the VM and the VM should see the ISO. Another option is to copy the ISO to the datastore where the VM resides and modify the CD/DVD device of the VM to the ISO location on the datastore. Hope that helps.

yeah coolsport00 is bang on the money here, you'll be "booting" from the ISO as if it were a CD in a virtual drive as such.
u can use the clients machine for installation. for this you need to launch vsphere from the clients machine. create a vm, change the settings for boot so that u can goto bios and enable cd as the first boot mode and even add a delay of 1000 msec for boot. this will let you in mounting the cdrom at the time of vm boot. rest the console will guide through.

I'm using VMware Infrastructure Client (VI) v2.5.0 on the client, not  vsphere unless we are referring to the same software.

I have no idea how to change the boot sequence in VIClient.  I 'm assuming you are not referring to BIOS motherboard boot order when I boot Win XP!

There are 5 screen shots concatenated into a single image.
1.   1nd image -  I was able to upload the iso image to the ESXi hdd.
2.   2st image - console after boot.  note error messges.
3.   3 & 4 images  - screen shots of tabs on VI Client.
4.   image 5 - edited CD/DVD Drive 1 to get iso image from CD/DVD 1.  Can't ckeck "connect at power on"?

Where do I change the boot order?  Which boot order VM or motherboard bios boot order when I launch win xp?

Thanks.

He's referring to the VM's boot order. To verify boot sequence -> Go to the Options tab instead of the Hardware tab as you posted right above there, and click Boot Options on left then check to select to "Boot to BIOS setup upon restart"; then, restart your VM and the BIOS settings will come up and make sure CD is set to 1'st in the Boot Order list (it should be by default).

Under your CD/DVD Device in Hardware tab, you have "client device" selected so if you place your Ubuntu CD in your workstation CD/DVD drive and boot up the VM, you should be able to boot to the Ubuntu ISO.

The image attached below is the sequence of things I did to get ESXi to boot the CD/DVD on the client box.  During boot, it acts as if the client CD/DVD is not there.  There is not a message "Hit enter to boot CD/DVD."  ESXi then goes directly to the "Network" boot.  Don't know why?

Can I:
1.  Copy the ISO to a thumb drive and boot from it?
2.  I have the ISO image uploaded to the Ubuntu VM.  Is there a way to boot it from there?
3.  The ISO image is also on the client HDD.  Can it boot it there?
4.  Finally, I have a CD with the ISO "unzipped" (for lack of a better word).  Can I boot from that?

What would recommend?
Thanks.

~coolsport00,

Thank you for all your help and patience.  I do this as a hobby and not for a living. Obviously I therefore do not have the experience.

To solve the problem, I added second  client CD/DVD 2.  In the Mode box, I selected "Emulate IDE".  Next click the "Options" tab and give "Boot Options" a double click to open it. Check "Next time the virtual machine boots, force entry into BIOS setup screen."  You may optionally add up to a 10 second delay.  Finally close "Editing VM".

Power on the VM.  When the "Connect CD/DVD 1" button is enabled, click it and select "Connect to ISO image...".  The Add dialogue box pops ups, select the ISO file and click "Open."  Next, switch to the Consol tab.  The ESXI BIOS Setup will be displayed.  Navigate to "BOOT" and verify CD/DVD is before HDD and Network.  Close and save the BIOS settings.  The boot VMware screen is displayed.  After a few seconds the client CD/DVD spins up and the Guest OS begins to load.  That's it.  Problem solved!

Many thanks to all who contributed to this question!!!

The "N" drive is on the client.  I just had the wrong emulation mode.  Otherwise your instructions work perfectly!  Many thanks.
