Not understand in Morphology in NLP

I read a book in "Natural Language Processing (NLP)" and I need somebody to explain to me the following statement with examples.

A word’s surface form is its graphical (in written text) or spoken form.

Now my questions is: -
What is meaning "A word’s surface form" ? with examples.

There any fourms or like this experts-exchange web site I can ask questions about NLP ?

Because the ansswering for the two questions is important for me.
The "words surface form" is basically how the word looks or is pronounced.

It's distinct from the word, because of regional differences in spelling and pronunciation.

For instance, in English:

grey
gray

Or

There
They're

They're both pronounced similarly, but it's two different words.

So the "surface form" is what you start with before you've done any analysis to determine what is actually meant.

Hope this helps,
