Configuring EMC CX300

Hi Storage Experts,
I am trying to configure EMC Clariio CX300 which we bought from ebay. After going through the manual which says the first five disk are reserved of FLARE OS and should be left alone. But, when I build RAID group from Navisphere I am allowed to select the first five drives as well.

Does that mean I can go head and use the drives as allowed by the Navisphere software or just follow the manual and leave the drives as it is.

I am just concerned because if I am allowed to use the first five drive why should not I.

Please, let me know what you suggest.
Thanks in advance

Thank You meyersd.
It is not recommended to use them for active data but you can use them for non active archive space.   If youo put a database on them it will effect the overall performance of the array.  So Yes you can use the space but be wary of what  you put there.
The Vault drives are generally for FLARE operations only, though you would have an option to create new volumes, it is Strongly recommended that you don't use them.

Let's say there is a drive failure in the Vault space, Clariion will be re-building the FLARE volumes (Multiple RAID protection) + user volumes (Custom) at the same time which will result in very poor re-build and user performance.

FLARE & Vault (Stiorage Nerves)

EMC's best practice says that it is fine to use the first five drives but:
- heavy I/O will affect Navisphere responsiveness (and Unisphere, obviously)
- I/O must be less than 100 IOPS if you want to perform a FLARE upgrade
- you mustn't put private LUNs on the first five drives. Private LUNs include snap cache.
- likewise, do not use the drives as a MirrorView target (not that it's possible with a CX300) as this has caused SP stability issues with some releases of FLARE.

So - no problem. There is a lot of nonsense out on the interwebs about using FLARE drives  - but EMC engineering and their best practices white papers (available from
PowerLink) should be your guide  Just be aware of the caveats and don't put your Exchange or mission-critical SQL databases on the FLARE drives. :-)

Also has to be said - most organisations that have a CX300 are unlikely to be really pushing the I/O envelope..
From what I've seen over the last five years is that most 150-200 seat companies generate about 2000 IOPS when heavily virtualized. Which is about one shelf of 10k drives....
