You may be able to get more info from the Event viewer .
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;308427

Windows XP Events and Errors
Enter the message source and ID in the text field, then click Search
http://www.eventid.net/search.asp

Check disk for errors by the way....
if you found errors try reinstall application after that.
good luck

Possbily see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3074

It doesn not have the same error number as yours but the messages is the same.  Check your .NET installation and correct if necessary.

Thanks to you both for suggestions. No success yet ....Here's what I have done

1) Ran chkdsk in repair mode.  There were some bad sectors and file segments.

2) Checked Event Viewer - Erroirs showed at the time of the problem in Sidebyside, event id 32 and event id 59.  This identified that Dependent Assembly V80.CRT not available.  Not sure if this related to iTunes installation, but downloaded it and installed.

3)  Repaired the .NET Framework 2.0, and applied new .NET 3.5 Service Pack

It could be that I screwed up the .NET install as used Repair mode rather than a complete delete and reinstaIl.  As well as iTunes not working, I now have problems opening pdfs (OK on Photoshop, not in Acrobat) so there is something missing for that process too now.

My next step is starting to look like  a complete rebuild of the OS.  Its probably become a rats nest over time and the disk faults obviously don't help.  If there is anything else that comes to mind I'd love to hear it, as re-build could be a long task.

Thanks

You can use the tool here http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx to totally remove .NET if you wish to try that again.

Thanks dbrunton. I used the tool to completely remove the existing .NET Framework, and now have a solid new .NET Framework installation with all the latest updates.

Acrobat Reader is OK now.  Unfortunately iTunes is not.  Actually I can live without it, but the nagging knowledge that my PC is missing something will not let me rest....

1) Are there any other tests that will verify the .NET Framework is OK.  I did spot something on Aaron Stebner's blog about problems that can occur under some circumstances but I got no error messagesat all during the removal, installation, or when applying the patches.   How else can I verify all is OK with .NET?

 2) If .NET is OK - what else can cause the iTunes Error 7 , which is raised for both iTunes, and the iTunes Installation Helper.   Windows Error 14001 is noted on the err message  - and the Event ids 32 and 59 show in the logs - which indicate that the V80.CRT assembly is missing - again I have installed this so am not sure what to try next.  Buy a Mac if I want iTunes maybe ?
Aaron Stebner has a verification tool http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx

Don't think you've tried it.

The V80.CRT assembly is part of Microsoft Visual C .runtimes.

Check you are uptodate with all your Service Packs and Security fixes.  That may solve the problem.

If that doesn't then the VC runtimes may need to be downloaded.

Hey that was quick - thanks

The verification (.NET Framework 3.5 SP1) checked out OK.

Service packs and Security Fixes are up to date

I'll check out the VC runtimes....listening to Bob Dylan on the walkman for now...

I installed the VC runtimes as suggested - had done this earlier but this time used latest version SP1

Then  removed not only iTunes but also Apple Software Updater, before doing the reinstal of iTunes package

Thanks for sticking with this dbrunton and for very responsive support
