Opening a syslog file on linux question. - C++

I have to parse a linux syslog.txt file for certain lines and output these lines to a web page.  I will be using c++.

This syslog.txt file is being writtenfo all the time by ceertain system processes etc, so if I have to parse it, will there be any problems opening it and reading it at the same time other processes are opening it and writing to it?

Should I make a temp copy of the file initially, read it, then delete it?

What is the 'best' way to tackle this?
