IPV4 Address scheme

I have a doubt about the IP address scheme for class A, class B, and class C address space. I read that class A, B, & C can be identified by checking the following table :

A 0XXXXXXX 0 - 127
B 10XXXXXX 128 - 191
C 110XXXXX 192 - 223

However, there is a clause that classes can be checked by looking at the subnet masks:

A  255.0.0.0
B   255.255.0.0
C   255.255.255.0

Which way is more appropriate?

If we have an addree 12.13.14.0 255.255.255.0, which nclass would it fit in???
