the server needs to be restarted to undo the changes be dns 2008

Hi , I have a 2008 server standard edition which runs exchange. Recently there have been some dns issues on this box so I decided to remove the role then re-add it. It removed ok but when I try to re-add it it says the role failed and the server needs to be restarted to undo the changes. So I restart and try again only to see the same error. Any ideas ?

What role did you remove & try to add back?
Check your NIC settings to ensure that the DNS servers listed are valid and available.

It was the DNS role, there is a SBS 2003 server running DNS also which is listed on the NIC as 1st DNS, then 127.0.0.1 as second dns. I have removed the entry 127.0.0.1 for now as there is no DNS service running on this 2008 box. I can add other roles like DHCP no problem.

Update: After reading through a lot of threads I decided to do an inplace re-install or "upgrade" using the original Server Standard 2008 DVD supplied by MAPS. This did not work, it said "Upgrade option is disabled because you are running a 64-bit operating system and are trying to upgrade to a 32-bit operating system". even though I chose the x64full installation option. This turns out to be a bug on the MAPS DVD. I shall try to obtain a bug free install DVD/image and try again.

I'm glad it's all functional.
Could you please define "broken replication" a little more? Surely that shouldn't be grounds for a complete DCPromo?

No other comments were made by experts so had to call microsoft to resolve.
