move virtual machines from esxi4 to esx3.5

I have 2 esx servers, one with esxi 4.1 and one with esx3.5
the virtual machines are stored on a nas, my idea is that if one server fails, I just load the vm's on the other esx server.
the question is that I'm not sure if I can load vm's created on the esx4.1 server on the 3.5 one, is it possible just adding the vm or do I have to convert it first?

This is a "yes and no" answer I'm afraid

Yes you can just load them without conversion per se

if youve created them on ESXi 4.1 they may use Virtual Machine Hardware version 7 (you can see what version on the Vm within the VI Client)

ESXi 3.5 supports VM hardware version 4 (dont ask about what happened to 5 and 6 !) but not 7 so if they are hw version 7 you cant do what you want to do

AFAIK there is no way to go back to version 4 from version 7 but I'm happy to be proved wrong!
