3550 IOS ISSUE

Hi I wish to change the ios on my 3550, but although my fa0/1 is up/up, my vlan is only showing as up/down, so can 'ping' from tftp server pc to switch and vice versa.

Im assuming because it is a L3 switch there is something else I need to do and Im not sure.

Ive set 'ip routing' although im not using in routing protocols.

can anyone assist?

Is the int vlan shutdown?   When you add a interface vlan, it is automatically added with the shutdown command to keep it from causing unexpected issues (such as entering the wrong vlan number).   Do a no shutdown under the interface vlan to enable it.
Don JohnstonInstructorCommented:
Make sure the VLAN that port fa0/1 is a member of actually exists.  For example, if fa/0 is a member of VLAN 20, use the "show vlan brief" command to confirm that a VLAN 20 has been created. If it isn't, create it with the "VLAN 20" command from global config mode.

the vlan.dat has been deleted and Int vlan1 has also been 'shutdown' and 'no shut' and this is why i cant understand!!

Is there some difference between a L2 & L3 switch when trying to connect both switch and pc?

ive also set 'ip routing' thinking this would help, but it doesn't!
mikey250Author Commented:
ive just checked again.

- correction my pc can ping itself only.
- the switch cannot ping anything.

pc settings:

ip address: 10.10.10.129
sm: 255.255.255.0
dg: 10.10.10.1

L3 Switch settings:

int vlan 1
ip address 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0
no shut

Im not sure what to put here if anything as it is now a L3 Switch:

int fa0/1
no ip address
no switchport
no shut
mikey250Author Commented:
- the int fa0/1 - does show up/up
- int vlan1 - still shows up/down.
Don JohnstonInstructorCommented:
fa0/1 needs to be a layer 2 port.

int fa0/1
 switchport

Hi,  Ive always wondered, when rebooting the 3550 all lights from 1 - 24 highlight orange, then green, then 3 - 24 go back to green and stay green until boot process appears to complete, but 1 & 2 stay go off throughout, why as only fa0/1 has a cable in place as others are empty.  am i spotting an intermittant problem later on?
Don JohnstonInstructorCommented:
The sequence of port LEDs that are off and on during bootup represent which Power On Self Tests are running.
