MAC Printing problem

I have been using  Xerox X12 Docu Color Printer with a RIP (server with Windows 2000 with a specialized software "Fiery" from Xerox).
This printer prints both on A4 and A3 in high resolution .The priner being more than 10 years of age, and Im now face compatibility issues printing from our new Intel based Macs (running the latest Mac OS 10.6 system).
The old Macs used Mac OS 10.3 with 'AppleTalk' support for which there is driver support on the Xerox website (up to 10.3 being the last).
(The new Macs don't support 'AppleTalk'.)

Somehow I managed to connect using "IP Printing" with the available drivers for 10.3.

The problem now is that it takes longer to print, at times prints in black & white and we sometimes end up trying 2-3 times before we get color
and sometimes doesn't print at all. please help
