how old would a Compaq Presario model 5000 be?

I have someone interested in buying this computer for small dollars.
It is a Presario 5000 desktop and is having bootup problems. They only want a computer with Windows XP.
If this computer is too old to support XP then no need for me to try to find out why it boots up half the time. I do not remember what O/S is on it, due to having booted so many the last few months. I have not been able to get it running lately.

Any links to the age of Presario 5000's?
I've not found any "dates in time".

Sounds like possibly blown capacitors on the main system board. power supply, or a bad hard drive.

If it did boot up, but does not have, or can not support, Windows XP, she would not want it any way.

Doesn't XP require a certain minimum amount of Ram?

Windows XP will work for sure, but not in best performance.
I typically test-boot a PC using puppy linux from a CD.  It's super easy.  You need a working computer with a CD-RW drive for downloading the files from the puppy linux website.  Once you've made the CD you can boot up the old computer from the CD-ROM and "see if it works."  Very helpful.  Plus, puppy linux is kind of a cool little operating system.  This also works good when you need easy access to files on a crashed PC.

The dates on the driver downloads range from 1998 to 2002.  With only 128MB of ram, it would run XP very poorly and spend more time swapping to and from disk than actually running programs.

The original operating system was apparently Windows 95 though it does list Windows XP as the last option.

The Presario 5000 series were launched in 1998
If XP was installed originally, you'd have the OEM sticker on the chassis.

If not, there is a chance it is an older OS.

track the Serial Number and find the origianl specs.  But if there is not an OEM sticker for XP, I would doubt XP was installed originally and therefore shouldn't have OEM XP on it.
i would not try to repair it, or use it with XP
you can have much better systems very cheap now - check in the pc shop !

I've started another question about that link you provided. I tried it and it is not working easy as it says.
