Exchange 2010 mail flow.

Exchange 2010 has Mailbox/Hub/CAS roles.

I would like to know in which case scenarios that each one talk to another and which in case it skips one.

For instance, if I am not wrong Outlook client when it needs to view the message, it doesn't need to go through CAS,but when it send a message internal or external, should it  go to CAS then HUB then Mailbox (for internal )and straight to CAS then to Hub then to EDGE then to internet (for external email), also when coming from outside to inside how does it flow (viewing and sending email from outside).

I hope you understood my question.
in 2003 the email (viewing,sending/receiving) was pretty straight forward.

So please explain to me which server role in 2010 get hit when:
From internal network the client (View, send, receive)
the same from external when the email comes in or the client tries just to View the email.

Thanks

I believe Dematzer is right. I guess Exch2007 used CAS as front end for OWA.
Exch2010 uses Edge server as  front end for OWA.
left to be confirmed by you experts out there.

I checked the microsoft link below, but they don't mention Mapi client (outlook) regarding access to CAS. it still sounds like CAS is used for clients coming from outside such as OWA,

I don't see in Microsoft site ,CAS mentioned for Mapi client (outlook), I am not sure if MAPI client access Mailbox without going through CAS.

Regarding Edge, is it for incoming mail only, what is its function?

by reading more articles I get more confusions...

well, let s start from inside exchange 2010.
1-if outlook needs to view a message(connect to exchange2010), what is the route?
2-if outlook needs to send a message to a user which is inside. what is the route
3-if outlook needs to send a message to a user outside. what s the route?

from outside to inside:
1-what if a user uses OWA to view the message(connect to exchange 2010). what is the route?
2-if a user sends an email using OWA to exchange 2010 . what is the route
3-if a user uses Yahoo or hotmail email account to send   email to exchange 2010. what s the route?

thanks

so external emails(yahoo) doesn't use CAS.
I guess when Outlook connects to PF does not use CAS also, but might use CAS if PF is mailen abled and tries to send email to the PF
I don't know what else to tell you.
