VWD 2010 express can't seem to connect to my databases in SQL Server 2008.

I use the Connect to Database feature in the Tools menu and select Microsoft SQL Server. When I get to the Add Connection window I hit refresh next to the Server name drop-down but sever name show up but I'm not able to choose a database. (see screen shoot)

I'm getting an error whenever I test the connection. The error reads as follows:

"A network-related or instance-specific error occured while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - could not open a connection to SQL Server)"

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Are you sure about the server name.  Try:

Is this a full installation of SQL Server, or is it SQL Server Express?

Thank you that what I tried yesterday and it did work.
Glad to be of assistance.

Do you have SQL Server Management Studio installed?  That will show you the name of your Server instance, as well.
