Setting default program to open all AVI files

I know how to set a default program to open files by their extension. However, this is a more complicated case.

I want to open all AVI files with VLC instead of QuickTime. But a lot of them come with multiple dots in the names, such as and video.two.avi. I can right-click a file and choose "Open With" > "Other" > "VLC" and check "Always Open With", but it only sets that file. I presume Finder considers the extension to be .one.avi and does not set the same program for .two.avi or .three.avi.

Multiple dots is a common convention with downloaded files--I'm not naming them myself. And Finder does seem to default to QuickTime for any.words.with.dots.avi, so can I make any *.AVI default to VLC?

Did you already try setting this in the Finder? (select file, then select menu/command File/Get Info, then select Change All). See example in screen shot, althought the expample file is not AVI...

Before you can select "Change All" you'll need to select a program under "Open with:"
