Cannot send/receive email with outlook

i can ping pop3.strato.de and smtp.strato.de from my laptop. i am behind the firewall,so it means the firewall is not blocking it.hope i am correct.correct me if i am wrong

Are you trying to configure pop3 account ....
1) telnet to the pop3 server on port 110
2) try to configure pop3 account with outlook express and post the results

what is the difference between the two i.e. outlook express and outlook 2007

There is no major difference between OL7 & express. Just to try out with different app.
Are you trying to configure the account with in the network or outside.?
And while configuring did you tried to do Test Account Settings ?

yes and i get error

the error i get is--

Send test e-mail message: Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

Ok So the sending is causing the issue, make sure the mail server is accepting the connections from the machine that you are trying.enable NCSA log on SMPT virtual server if it is e2k3 or SMTP Receive connector log if it e2k7 & Try to telnet the mail server on port 25 and drop and an email.

ok,i cannot telnet the smtp.strato.de 25 BUT i can telnet the pop3.strato.de 110

1) Are you using Exchange as a mailserver?

2) On your screen shot it shows that outgoing SMTP mail server is "smtp.strato.de" then you must able to telnet on port 25. pop3 110 is used to download the email (inother words for incoming) .

i guess may be the smtp of the strato requires (SMTP with authorisation),may be that it is not accepting telnet

r u using win2k7 OS on your laptop then u need to install the telnet client on the system

i am using win7 pro.

i can telnet the pop3 110 but not the smtp  25

i can ping both pop3.strato.de and smtp.strato.de

Make sure the mail server is responding to smtp connections.

from outside the company i can telnet smtp,but from behind the firewall i cannot.i have enabled in packet filtering the port 25

From outside are you able to configure the Pop3 account? is yes then definetly you need check with firewall again...

can you please help me to find out the problem. i have allowed smtp port 25 in packet filtering of the firewall.
i can telnet pop3 but cannot telnet 25

the firewall i am using is Zentyal(ebox)
