Adobe photoshop question - trying to understand how coloring/painting works

I drew a cartoon picture of a dog, setting is an outdoor grassy area with some rocks and flowers, etc. When I use the paint bucket tool to color inside the dogs body, which is a black coat on top and white underneath, the paintbucket tool stays constrained to the patch I drew on his back that was black. In other words, if I drew a circle patch on his body, the color would not fill his entire body, but only inside the circle. How does Photoshop know how to do this without actively selecting an area? This is really cool and makes my job easier, but I'm trying to understand how it works. I have Photoshop CS. Thanks in advance.
