Asset & Inventory System

Hello Experts,

My client is looking for an Asset / Inventory Control Solutions for their business. Here is the breakdown.

Client Business: They are an IT Consulting / Integration Firm. They install various types of Technologies from Standard Cabling to complex ROLL-OUTS (Computers, Routers, Switches etc..) for various customers.

Needs: They would like the ability to track by categories the following:
1- Company Assets (ie Tools, Hardware, Vehicles etc)
2- Customer Assets from receipt to installation and where it was installed (ie computer roll outs- they would tag it or use the bar code on the PC and track it from staging to installation)

The software would need to be Windows Based (currently they are using Windows 2008 Server r2 with sql server 2008. They would also like to use some sort of wireless scanner (WiFi or RF)

Of course Open Source or Affordable Cost is preferred . But they will look at all options that meet their needs. If this software could also manage their rollouts and or projects, that would be a HUGE PLUS!
Hopefully I have given enough info, if not I can get the answers..
Thanks,

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

We currently use TrackIT which does a very good job on several of the tasks you mentioned.

Depending on the size you may just use something as simple as WASP for inventory control. They have a very modular system with WiFi enabled devices for real-time inventory control. I believe you can customize it. However, I don't think it's open source.

Finally, Spiceworks is a GREAT program for many of the fronts you listed, and a price tag of $0! It's setup is a bit more cumbersome, but overall delivers great results once you go live. Tracking, inventory, Self-Service, AD Integration, etc. All are included for free. I believe that it is available in open source as well.

Good Luck
