JQUERY - HOW TO TRIGGER CLICK EVENT?

Dear Mr.Experts,

Could you please advise an effective way to trigger mouse click event by Jquery or Java Script.
The following code is something I have been trying to use and it is not triggering a mouse click event.
I want to Click Event occur when user click on a <a href =' ..."> </a> link.

This is not working: Please advise. Thank you so much.

I want code that  can  trigger the event when a different element is clicked:

<a href="#" id="other" > activate</a>

$('#other').click(function() {
  $('#target').click();
});

Please tell appropriate JQuery file name to use  for above code...
