Exchange front end is unreachable to Exchange Server

We have a web server that server as kind of a front end to our Exchange 2003 server.  Mobile devices and OWA hit the web server to connect to the Exchange server.  The other day none of our mobile devices could sync with Outlook.  When I open up System Manager on the Exchange server it shows that the status is unreachable for the web server.  On the web server it shows that it is unreachable for the web server and the mail server.  But we can ping the mail server from the web server.  And the mail server shows up in the System Manager on the webserver.

Internally users are able to use Outlook without any problems.  Users externally can use OWA without any problems.  But all of our mobile devices cannot connect to Outlook.  Everything was working for until a couple of days ago.

Can anyone assist in troubleshooting this issue?

If I'm picturing a map of your topology, I see a cloud pointing to a web server, pointing to an exchange server pointing to it's internal clients.

If there is nothing in between the web server and exchange server, including firewalls, I'm going to assume it's something "broken" on the exchange server.

Have you checked to make sure none of the services that are set to "Automatic" aren't hung up in "starting" instead of "started"?

Have you verified that all the Automatic services are Started aside from the usual ones like Performance Logs and Alerts.  I'm especially wanting to make sure your firewall hasn't started back up on the Exchange server.

The web server is in the DMZ and the exchange server is inside the firewall.

All the services set as Automatic are started.  None of them are starting.

And all the Automatic services are started except for Performance Logs and Alerts like you mentioned.

I have made sure that the Windows firewall is disabled on the web server and the exchange server.
I'm assuming your web front end is with IIS?  If so, have you done an IISRESET?  Do you think it's a problem with your web front end?  Because I'm assuming it is at this point.

I did the IISRESET as well as rebooted the web server.

In ESM for the web server, under Queues the Default SMTP Virual Server and the Exchange MTA is listed as not available.  I can't remember if they were enable before because I think the Exchange MTA is usually disabled.  And I try the re-enable the Default SMTP Virtual Server and becomes available for a little while and then becomes not available again.

I did check the disk space, there is 59GB available.
What kind of errors are you getting regarding the SMTP Virtual Server starting and stopping in the error log?

I just started the logging for the SMTP Virtual Server because it wasn't turned on.  But SMTP Virtual Server is started right now, has been for the last hour or so but the webserver is still showing unavailable.

Looks like SMTP Virtual server has been up for a while so nothing is showing up in the logs that it is having trouble connecting.

Does anyone know why on the web server it would show the mail server and the web server as unavailable and the mail server shows just the web server unavailablen (so it would seem that the web server is not able to communicate through Exchange with the mail server) but OWA users are still able to connect just not mobile devices connecting to Exchange?
