Alter table with existing data and then load default values into table

I have a sql table T1 , i need to add some new columns to this table.
The table currently holds over 5000 rows of data.

What is the best way to go about doing this, without losing data from the existing columns and loading some default values in the existing columns.

Any code samples will be helpful

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

To ensure that your existing inserts/updates to this table do not get affected, the new columns added should be nullable -

CREATE TABLE test_tab (col_a INT) ;
ALTER TABLE test_tab ADD col_b VARCHAR(20) NULL ;
