White rectangle on desktop windows xp

Small white rectangle shows on desktop.  Have checked desktop web properties My Home Page is NOT checked.  When I do check the MyHomePage the whole desktop to the right fills with a white box.  Have scanned computer for viruses using ESET.

When I reboot the rectangle does not show, but will appear after an hour or so...

When I click it nothing happens.  If I drag something over it I get the circle with a diagonal cross.

Right click on the taskbar, choose Toolbars, try unchecking any toolbars that might not look familiar.

Could you go in the  Deskop and All Users Desktop folder ?

Could you show System Files and hidden files. What is in these folders ?

I'm suspecting that it is a dialog box of some type that an application has put up there.  Sound Blaster was good at doing something like that.

You've clicked on it but have you right clicked on it?

Thanks to all so far.  Will try each proposed solution in turn...

Did check for hidden files in any desktop folder I have - none to found.

Does seem like its a misbehaving process or application...
Thanks so much for all your help!
