SQL Server 2005

I am getting the following error:

SQL Server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with.  (Error getting instance ID from name.)

Can anyone assist me?  What is it wanting me to do?

Thanks

This usually means that:

1. Your account or the account that runs SQL Server doesn’t have the correct permissions on the “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names” registry key or the key is inaccessible.

2. You need to specify which named instance of SQL Server you want to start, e.g.

"start sqlservr.exe -c –SServername\InstanceName -T3608"

Thanks, epichero22.  But I don't know much about SQL server so I need a little more help.  How do I find the name of the SQL Server and the Instances to choose from?  I think I know the SQL server name but have no idea how to find the instances.

Also, how to I add permissions to a registry key?

Thanks for your help.
