Keeping certain characters in a cell within mySQL

If I have a cell in mySQL that i am retrieving with PHP, How do I take the first 5 letters after the first 2 letters and store it in a variable?

Example:

Cell says:

%% hello123

I want my variable to =  hello1

I will assume that you have selected your MySQL data into a variable called $var.  From there you just need to do the following to copy this into a new variable called $var2.

$var2 = substr($var, 1, 5);
