What's up with configSections? Does not like appSettings or keys?

Normally, I can add appSettings tag and then the key tags to a web.config file.
Apparently, the project I have inherited has configSection, and does not like appSettings or the keys.

Here is a snippet.

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0">

	<configSections>

      <add key="logdirectory" value="C:\\mytemp\\"></add>

		<sectionGroup name="system.web.extensions" type="System.Web.Configuration.SystemWebExtensionsSectionGroup, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken
