"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Is it an inplace upgrade or side by side upgrade?

i do not understand your question
san_spyCommented:
1. Inplace upgrade basically means you upgrade the SQL Server 2000 to SQL 2008 in the same server by over writing the existing installation.

2. Side by side means you will be installig SQL 2008 in a new server and restoring the 2000 backups in the new server.

Even though it sounds pretty easy it needs lots of planning and testing.

1. Install SQLServer in the new machine.
2. Transfer every thing like jobs, logins, linked servers, end points etc.
3. Put the database in the current server to read only mode to prevent any updating.
4. Take a backup move it to the new server restore it. Fix all the orphan users.
5.Change the compatibility mode of the database.
