About Global Catalog Server

I like to understand the role of Global Catalog Server in domain logon process .

(1)
As I understand , for multiple domains network ( Forest network ) , if the domain user try to logon , it need to contact GC to assist for logon process because GC contain Universal Group Membership listing ???  Am I right at this point ???

(2)
Without the GC in Forest Network , the domain user CANNOT logon ( assuming no cache ) ?? Am I right ???

(3)
The Domain users ( in Forest network) , need 2 components for logon process , 1st component is - - DC which responsible for authentication of logon , 2nd component is -- Global Catalog Server for Universal Group Membership  ???  Am I right ??  If right , can someone explain in more detail how this work ??

Thanks.

Mike,

If my (3) is correct , then , should I say , the Universal Group Membership information is only stored at GC server . The normal DCs do not store Universal Group Membership info ???
