Why is Word 2002 trying to install every time I click Internet Explorer?

At one time, I started to install office xp, then in the middle of the installation process, I went to the task manager and clicked "End Task".

I purchased Office 2010 a few days ago.  I tried to install it, but it failed (because another installation is in progress,  i.e., Word 2002.

Without having to reformat the C:\ drive, how can I stop the "Word 2002" installation and install Office 2010?

Uninstall Office XP, reboot and proceed with installing Office 2010..

Backup the PST files as well, and also if using Outlook, backup %appdata%\Microsoft\Outlook as well..... Has some Outlook customizations in there, and the Nicknames file....

In the registry if you backup "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles" you can import it once youre done to have Outlook fully reconfigured......

If you have problems with the install.....

How do I uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007 or Office 2010 suites ...

If you never had an Office install successfully on this system, dont worry about backing anything up, just go to toe MS article for help in removing the remnants of the failed install, and hsould be able to proceed with 2010......

Okay.  I don't use Outlook for e-mail so I don't have to back up anything.  The "Fix it now" articles mentioned Office 2003 thru 2007.  Office XP is not mentioned.  I will try to do a manual removal of Office XP.  If it fails, then I can always reformat the hard drive and start over.  I don't have anything on the computer worth backing up.
