Rebuilding My Index in Outlook 2010

I have a pretty huge Outlook database.  I love the search feature with 2007 & 2010 that I can find virtually anything in seconds.  However... I take 8-10 hours to rebuild my Index with the drives and programs I want indexed, and then when I go to use it, it tells me "search results may be incomplete because items are still being indexed."  So, not only has it now gone ahead and started reindexing (or rebuilding the index) what I already had indexed, but it's decided on using different drives than I wanted.  Is this a Vista bug?  It's slowing down my system (using my resources) to do an improper job of something I just had it do properly.  Help, this is pissing me off, LOL!  How do I get it to lock in the index rebuild I've just had it complete?

ASKER

It is 6,518,449 kb large.  What is that, 6 1/2 GB... Pretty big, huh?

How do I reduce it without losing information?  In other words, how do I reduce it while still maintaining the majority of information?  Is there a good general procedure to follow?  Recommendations welcome!!

How do I run a scanpst?  (Sorry, I'm not very adept at this.)  Will that only determine if it's corrupt, or will it also fix it if it is?

Thanks renazonse; I have to run out right now, but will run that later when I return; looks somewhat complicated.  This will work for Outlook 2010, right?

Thanks much, renazonse, you were right, fairly easy process, didn't take long, either.  I scanned & repaired with SCANPST, and then rebuilt the index, now we'll see if it stays that way.  Your help was greatly appreciated!
