Becoming a Hosted exchange provider

Hello,

We are a small company hoping to  become a hosted exchange provider, we have a datacentre and need to know how much it wil cost to set up and what the licensing implications are if we start accepting mail for multiple domains. also is there any CAL costs attached?

Unless something's changed, during a presentation I saw a couple of years back, MS will GIVE you the software (Server and Exchange) if you want to sell hosted exchange solutions and they take (VERY rough estimate from a WHILE ago) 80-90% of the fee charged to the client. (It's actually a fixed per user fee, but when you consider what others are charging you generally wouldn't mark it up by more than 10-20%).

ASKER

sounds great but we'd like our own mananged solution so we could make profit on the hosted mailboxes, i notice they do HMC but is that just a guideline architecture? i know it can be done on a simple server installation but it would support the amount of users we'd need to migrate.
You must consider licensing.  Your standard exchange license may not permit reselling individual mailboxes.  Just like you can't buy a PC with Windows and start renting it out - you have to buy a license to rent it out with Windows.

I'll add:
DISCLAIMER: Licensing advice offered here is a "best effort" and based on the understanding of the respondents. Licenses can change and we may not be aware of these changes or may misunderstand them. Further, licenses can differ by country and/or region and what we understand to be true in our region could be false in your region. "they told me on Experts-Exchange" will not be a valid defense in a software audit.  All licensing questions should be confirmed with the appropriate licensing authority (the maker of the software/issuer of the license).
thanks lee, and for the disclaimer :)

i need to know what i need to do and what i would cost, finding prices is v difficult.
They don't publish them.  You need to be a partner and then apply to the program, if memory serves.  You are a partner, right?
yes, we are a gold partner
