How to setup/see workgroup computers in Windows7
I have a small network of computers using a router and all computers can see each other. However, the one Windows7 computer can be seen by the other XP machines but I can't figure out how to see the XP's from the Windows7. Is My Network Places hidden somewhere in W7 or where would I be able to see the other computers and their shared files, etc.?

It doesn't show any of the workgroup, etc.
on the bottom it doesn't show a list of the systems in your network at all? Because at the top image it will only show currently connected. On the bottom of it wil have a list of all devices in the "the following discovered devices can not be placed..." section
ASKER
No, it doesn't show anything, but the other computers can see this one just fine.
any firewall settings active or any antivirus/network security (ie Norton Internet Security) that is blocking access to this machine?
ASKER
no, access to this machine is not the problem, it's this machine seeing the other systems. They can all see each other, the W7 is the only problem child.
On the Win 7 box, open the Network and sharing center, click on advanced sharing settings on the left hand side, make sure "turn on network discovery" is on.
ASKER
yes, it's on.
Thanks for the points but I don't feel like I've earned em yet :)
Here's one idea:
Change setting "Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended)"
to "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers". This should let your windows 7 computer see all the computers on your home network regaurdless of the operating system.
The setting is under Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings
Home or work (current profile)
HomeGroup connections
and here's another:
Microsoft has a hotfix for the LLPT in Windows XP that will also make it so that windows 7 computer will see windows xp computers.
KB922120-v6-x86
fix215806
Finally, if all the above didn't help, try this post:

Read through it since it not only discusses file sharing but actually 'seeing' the systems. Not sure what is different between your and my config but I can see all here. Win 7, XP, Vista and all printers and IP connected devices. I know that doesn't help but maybe it will give you hope :)
Lemme know how things turn out

The problem from the beginning was that one of the laptops had an IP set to something in a different network so it wouldn't connect. Once I got that fixed, your solution worked fine.
