Cannot log on with administrator account

When I try to log on to my laptop with the administrator account, I get the message "the user profile service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." This is the only account with administrator privleges. This account's username is golson. It does have a folder in the Users folder.  Is there anything I can do to get this account working again or create a new administrator account without reinstalling the operating system or upgrading to W7?

Thanks,
Greg

johnb6767,

The subkey with the path to users\golson is there with .bak at the end of it.  This is the only one listed so is my next step to remove the .bak from it and retest?

Thanks,
Greg
johnb6767,

I now realize what you were telling me to do.  There were two subkeys that were the same with the one for users\golson with .bak at the end.  I attempted to rename the other by adding ".old" to the end of it, but it would not let me rename it.  It said "The registry editor cannot rename ____. Error while renaming key." Would the error display because of a permissions issue?

Thanks,
Greg
johnb6767's solution worked except I had to log in under the golson (admin acct) account in safe mode to be able to change the subkeys in the registry.  Thanks to cataleptic_state for the help in logging in under safe mode.  My problem is solved. Thanks to you both.
Sorry for the delay in this one.. Glad youre fixed....
