How can I manage my home broadband internet use to all my computer/devices?

This is a continuation of question https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/26701442/How-can-I-manage-my-home-broadband-use.html.

I still need to control how my children use my home internet broadband connection. In previous question, answer only covered computers, but did not included devices like iPod, Sony PSP, xbox, Nintendo Wii, which do not have a window OS. I need a solution to monitor and control using a Windows XP SP3 computer, but monitoring should include the devices I previously mentioned beside Windows XP SP3.

Thanks,
shamigc

There is functionality support for this on your Router/Firewall. From the DHCP table you will be able to tell which the ip addresses of the devices. You should be able to monitor from the Router/Firewall the traffic coming in and going out fro the ip addresses of the devices. You will have to enable logging for this on your Router/Firewall.

If you are trying to prevent these devices from going to "non-kid-friendly" sites with logging, then your options are:

1.  Run a content filter app and proxy these devices through your XP box
     -  possible app to try (http://www.cyclope-series.com/internet-filtering/internet-content-filtering-software.html)
2.  On some devices, like playstation3, you can setup parental controls to restrict usage
     -  http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/basicoperations/parentallock.html

Hope this helps

Hi,

By now I just want to control, by IP, the download speed. I already searched for that 'option' on my ISP modem (ArrisWTM552), but I did not find it. I attached my home network diagram so you can see my hardware capabilities, in case you need them to recommend any software.

Thanks,

Products such as NetNanny and BSecure will accomplish controls by device.

A product like ClarkConnect will allow you a fair bit of control by MAC address and such, but requires some networking knowledge and some configuration, spare hardware (though nothing real powerful is necessary) and that's about it.  Pretty easy to use and setup if this is something you are familiar with doing.

Otherwise, educate the kids on what is 'ok' and what is not.

I want to control download speed by device, using IP, but using MAC address is also valid. Could you please send me the web page addresses of the software products you're suggesting me? I have some networking knowledge, maybe I can apply what you're talking about.

Thanks,

The names are all typed as they appear (or advertised) and searched through any search engine.

but try here:

http://www.bsecure.com/
http://www.netnanny.com/

Though I'd go with ClarkConnect for the way you hope to manage the network.

You may want to see if your routers/switches can support QoS.  The Linksys WRT54Gxxx might be able to support tomato, but if the above items don't get you closer to your goal, than a QoS switch should help shrink the pipeline to your IP ranges.

If you just want to limit the BW per IP address, then you could use QoS as stated above.  There are several devices out there that can "police" the amount of BW on a source IP basis.  One way is to setup an access-list and apply that access-list to a policy.  A dell Powerconnect 2708 8-port switch will do that for you and is aroung $90 USD.  With the Dell, you have a pretty decent web GUI to accomplish this.
I have a 3Com Office Connect Ethernet Hub 3C16700A, Can I control BW with it?

Thanks,

Like I stated earlier, you need a switch with QoS capabilities.  I would recommend the Dell PowerConnect since its easy for you to setup and configure and won't break the bank.
I'm sorry but I started with QoS in this post:

Which was before "SeeMeShakinMyHead" commented.

Why was I not awarded points?
Plantwiz:

You're right, I do not how to fix my error, Can you help me to fix it?

Shamigc3,

I'm not certain if you can do it, or if a mod needs to assist.  I suspect a mod will need to assist just tell them what you would like to do.

And thank you for reconsidering.

PW
Just because he mentioned QoS, he's awarded all the points?  I mentioned policing, which is what needs to be done.  I guess I should just "toss" around acronyms and get all the points too.
