How can I determine if the visitor has a wide screen monitor?

When developing web-based applications, it is useful to know if the user (visitor) is using a wide aspect ratio monitor. The extra space to the right could be used more efficiently if I knew it was there.
If I assume that the user has a traditional monitor and they are using a wide screen, the page looks stupid all scrunched up on the left side.
If there is a way to determine the screen aspect ratio, I could have php build a page that has appropriate content on the right side. Otherwise put the content somewhere else.
I am looking for a way to tell php which style screen I am working with.

I am giving this question 50 points because I believe that, for the person that knows, this will be a simple, straight-forward answer. If this turns out to be a more complex problem than I assume, and a solution is provided, I will add aditional points.

mwochnick,
Thanks for the information. I believe that once I get this immediate problem solved with the javascript/cookie trick I will have to take the time to learn more about style sheets.

Ray,
Thanks for the advice and the information.
