Server SBS 2003 to Server 2008 R2 migration

Hello,

I am in the process of migrating a SBS 2003 to Server 2008 R2 and I'm running into some problems migrating the FSMO roles.  Everything is moved over to the new server except domain naming master.

The weird part is it shows it is updated to the new server.

Any suggestions of where to look?

Thanks

yes that is the exact guide I used.
Did it give you any errors when you transfered the role?

Try using ntdsutil to tranfer, see if it gives you any errors.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504
no errors.

All the screen shots you are posting you are transfering the PDC, RID, and Infra. In your first screen shot the domain naming master was the only one that was not transfered over. Is the domain naming master the one your are trying to transfer?
Have you tried seizing the role as oppose to transferring the the domain naming master role?

I am trying to move over the RID role.  I have tried seizing the role too.
You said it was the domain naming master in your original question.

And on the screen shots it is already transfered over.
The RID role is showing as on the 2008 server.

Have you followed step 12 in my guide?
OK I see what you guys are saying.  Yes it shows that the role has been transfer, but when I run: netdom query fsmo, it still shows the first screenshot where RID is still on SBS2003.
demazter - yes I did follow that step.  Just the netdom query fsmo command is not showing svr2008 having the role even though it shows it in the GUI.  Prehaps it is not a problem at all...just strange.
Can you post a screen shot of the domain naming master GUI Interface?
The first screen shot shows the domain naming master still on the old server.

can you run netdom /query fsmo on each server and post just so we know what you are seeing and if anything has changed since your first screen shot.
You may have to do a metadata cleanup.
There should be no need for that unless the DC has failed.

Screenshots from the 2003 server would be useful.

So it is still the Domain naming master that needs transfered over. The RID is already transfered.
OK, what you are seeing is normal.  The top box tells you the current master and the bottom box is the name of the server you are currently connected to and of you click change it will transfer it to this server.

The 2 screen shots above are what I would expect to see.
hm..it just doesn't look right.  I will let you guys know next weekend.  I am not removing the old server until next weekend.  I will run the metadata cleanup too, that is a good idea.
There is no need to run a metadatacleanup. The only reason you would need to run a metadatacleanup is if one DC crashed and was not coming back online or it was a failed demotion using dcpromo.
What do you mean it doesn't look right?

If you look at the screen capture above from the 2003 server it says Operations Master in the first box then has the 2008 server.

Then in the second box it says "to transfer the operations master role to the following computer" and gives you the name of another the 2003 server because you are attached to the 2003 server.

On the one from the 2008 server it says both because you can only transfer the role to the domain controller you are "bound" to.  If you right click on the top of the tree in Active Directory Users and Computers and select Change Domain Controller.  Chose the 2003 server then you will find the GUI on the 2008 server will change and the bottom box will be the name of the 2003 server.

What you are seeing is correct.  Check all 5 roles using the 2008 abalone and you will find they all should have the 2008 server in the top box.
Metadata cleanup is definitely not required!
sorry I haven't abandoned this question...the project got put on hold because of a couple DNS changes.  I will update it as soon as possible.
The migration complete successfully and did not have any problems transferring the roles.  Thanks
