Move SharePoint 2007 to 2010 - different server

I have a SharePoint 2007 database that I want to move to SharePoint 2010 on a different server.  Here are the details of each one.

I have a database in:
SharePoint 2007
Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2
SQL Server Express 2005

I want to move it to:
SharePoint 2010
Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
SQL Server Express 2008

I know that there are commands that are supposed to be run on the old database in order to convert it to 2010, but I don't know what they are or how they are to be run.  And then what steps are needed to move it to the new server?

I am very new to SharePoint and SQL.  Thanks for any help you can be.

Hi jimes82.  Thank you for the reply.

I think I have successfully completed all of the steps using the detach method.  I ran the stsadm addcontentdb command and it completed successfully, however when I go to the public URL, nothing comes up (Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage).

Is there something in IIS that needs to be turned on or adjusted?  What else do I need to do to get this up and running?

Thanks again,
Jono
if you check your IIS, is there a new site collection that was created?

double check, you will first need a web application, inside the web application you will need a site collection (this is the site that will display in IIS)

i would do a IISRESET /NOFORCE in cmd line and see if that solves your issue.
Thanks jimes82.

I made sure there is a web application and that IIS showed a corresponding site.  I'm not sure what you mean by site collection.  There is a site in IIS with the same name as the web application.  That site in IIS has multiple folders under it.  Is that a site collection, or should I be seeing something else?

I also stopped and restarted Internet services successfully using IISRESET /NOFORCE.  I'm still getting a 404 error in IE.

What else can I check or test?  I didn't have any problems at all with getting SP 2007 working on the other server.  But I also wasn't trying to import a database; it was all from scratch then.

Thanks again for any further help you can be.

now go into central admin and check to make sure you have a site collection under the new web application... the site collection is what will display the site in IE

also double check the web application and make sure its using the correct SP content DB, by default when you create a new one if you don't specify it will create a new one for you.   but you should have taken care of that with the powershell cmds
Hi jimes82,

I need some direction on how to check both of these things you've asked for.
You need to get into your Central Admin, do you have access to this admin account or are you a content manager, you may have to contact your IT to get access to Central Admin.

Yes, I have access to it.
I have had to bring someone in to redo this configuration on both servers.  Thanks for your help.
