Trying to create bootable usb drive with an .iso and unetbootin

I'm trying to create a bootable usb drive using the vmware standalone converter iso and unetbootin. I create the drive with no errors using unetbootin but when I try to boot my machine off of it I get the error message:

"Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,6)"

Note: At first I was getting this error message:
Could not find ramdisk image: /ubninit

and I found this solution:
http://code.google.com/p/xpud/wiki/UNetbootin

So I deleted the lines containing "initrd" from syslinux.cfg.

I found this thread which I thought applied to my situation:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20831319/kernel-panic-VFS-Unable-to-mount-root-fs.html

I don't have a lilo.conf but I tried adding the following line to my syslinux.cfg:
append root=/dev/sdc1

(I booted off of the hard drive and did a df -k to see that the usb drive was being mounted as /dev/sdc1)

But now I am getting the error message:
VFS: Cannot open root device "sdc1" or unknown-block(2,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(2,0)
