SBS 2003 to regular Server 2008 migration

Is it possible to migrate an Active Directory Domain on SBS 2003 to plain jane Server 2008 32bit server? I dont need to transfer Sharepoint, Exchange or SQL, just the domain, is this possible and how so?

Yes, very simple.

Run a full backup of the old server, join the new server to the domain and move all the FSMO roles and the GC over to the new server (along with all other services like DNS, DHCP...). Uninstall Exchange from the old server and demote the 2003 server to a member server to remove it from Active Directory.

I have read other places that you need a "SBS Transition Pack" to do this, is that true?

Yes, this is possible. Two SBS Servers cannot directly communicate. But the fact that you are using 2008 Standard or Enterprise Edition this will not be a problem. You would then promote the 2008 Server to a Domain Controller running DCPROMO.

JBond2010 > this is incorrect Two SBS Servers cannot directly communicate yes they can.  You can have 2 SBS servers as part of the same domain for 21 days as part of a migration.
@demazter I'm talking in general as oppose the migration.
