asked on

streaming media

Hi,

Does anyone know a good streaming media server or software that is not web based? For example you have a school based atmosphere and the principle wants to broadcast an announcement televised like a conference ..  Also that it can keep a library of videos and networked pcs can access them on demand..

Thank you

Only on Star Trek,...CSI shows,... and in Hollywood Movies.

You are asking for two entirely different things.

To do a televised announcement that is self-initiating from the source,... it would have to be a closed circuit TV system,...and the receiving TV would have to be left on all the time.  Doing it with PCs would never be dependable,...it is not possible to make the receiving-side play the video "on demand" from the sender,...the stream would have to be left live "pushing Black" all the time,..even when not used.  If anything severed the stream it would need to be manually reconnected at the "player" on the receiving side

The video library could just be simple File on a file share on a File server,...person double-clicks on the file and it opens in a proper Media Player.

i mean it can be a webcam type thing for the conference type atmosphere.. like the principle giving a speech being streamed live to each PC in the school.. but not over the internet just in the intranet..

For the video on demand thing I was thinking something similar like they have on the airplanes you push the movie you want it automatically starts streaming..
Conference:
Web cam combined with Windows Media Services might do that.  I can't give specifics because it can be complex,..you'll just have to research it out.  But Windows Media Services is already part of Server2003 and newer.

VOD (Video on Demand)
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$,......if you mean a "real" VOD system.
Just use video files sitting on a file share on a file server and forget it.  Create an Intranet (not Internet) HTML front-end for it if you want to create the illusion that it is more than it really it.
