Can't Modify Shared Web Part or Exit Edit Mode? What gives?
ok so I'm having issues.
I want to add a web part to the home page of a site that displays a particular view. preferably filtered by a field and the current user.
But I can't even get that far.
I can add a list view web part but I am unable to modift it in any way. I also can't exit edit mode.
In order to delete the list view web part, I have to close my browser and edit the page and do nothing else - just delete. That's the only thing that will work.

Could it be that you also have a javascript error on the page? (please check the left bottom corner of the page for any error messages) If that is the case, it may be that there is a cookie that is messing up your navigation - try cleaning the IE cache.
Otherwise, do ypu maybe have some content editor web part with some code that interfers with the list web part?
hope this gives you some ideas

I've cleared everything several times.
no errors at the bottom of the page. No CEWPs on this page - the default.aspx page.
The link to 'Exit Edit Mode' points to the same URL with a "#" character after it.
These links appear to become inactive after I move web parts around.

IIS reset did the trick
Excellent. I'm glad to hear that you're back up and running.
I'd love to know what got hung up to cause this. Phantom problems are really annoying!

Check your site to see if it is inheriting permissions from the parent. Then check to make sure that the account you are using is in the Site Owners or Web Designers group for that site. Also verify the permissions for those groups, as someone else may have changed them.
