Backup Domain Controller Not Used

I have two domain controllers on my network- DCHP for most users computers has both domain controllers IP numbers set as DNS servers. So for example in DHCP I have 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 as dns servers. These are both Active Directory, DNS domain controllers.

For some reason- when the primary goes down- users lose access to all network shares. So when 192.168.1.1 is down for some reason client computers are not using 192.168.1.2.

They cannot name resolve internal computer names. IP usage is fine. I look in their IPCONFIG and they do have the secondary (192.168.1.2) listed as a DNS server. Whey is it not being used?

The secondary DNS server should be used. Have you tried running ipconfig /flushdns to see if this helps?

Run dcdiag /test:dns
Where do you have located those shares? Maybe on 192.168.1.1 ?
As Darius said, if you have properly configured DNS as AD-I and DHCP scope issues leases with both DNS servers, your clients shouls use the second DNS server in case of first is down.

Does your second DC is set as Global Catalog ?

Could you show as dcdiag results?

yes- i tried the IPCONFIG /flushdns and that worked on my Server 2008- it suddenly could find shares. But when I tried this on my WIndows 7 clients- still no luck. They were all stuck with no access to network shares until primary was back on line. The shares are all over the place- not just on the primary DC.

Well I do get some errors on dcdiag /test:dns

               TEST: Records registration (RReg)
                  Network Adapter
                  [00000006] Intel(R) 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection:
                     Warning:
Missing AAAA record at DNS server 192.168.1.2:
                     HERCULES.infolinkdatacenter.com

                     Warning:
Missing AAAA record at DNS server 192.168.1.2:
                     gc._msdcs.infolinkdatacenter.com

So I have A records for the secondary DNS (192.168.1.2) but not AAAA? Do I need to add an AAAA rec? I wouldn't think so.

I do not know if my secondary DC is set as Global Catalog- how do i check that?

Thanks a lot. Marc

Check to see if second DC is a GC. Go to AD Sites and Services find second DC go to the properties of NTDS Settings check to see if Global Catalog is checked
