My guess is that you are either using stationary or signatures that got corrupted. Do you know how to check those?
Hi, rjef.

Are these messages you're creating, responding to, or just reading?

it is on some of the messages that come in.  When i try to reply outlook locks up with winword taking up tons of cpu cycles. I have to kill winword then it changes the editor to plain text.
What version of Outlook are you using?

2003 sp3.  I already did a repair

if you want i can send you the message that lock up outlook and see if it locks up yours just give me your email address.
"if you want i can send you the message that lock up outlook and see if it locks up yours just give me your email address."

EE's rules don't permit that.  It'd be unfair to any other expert who wants to help with the question.  How about saving the message in .msg format and uploading it here?

i can not upload it because it has sensitive data in it.
the error message i get it is.

This error message may appear if:
You have Word configured as your e-mail editor and Word is no longer present on the computer.
The form is corrupt.
Word has faulted.
You are running a version of Word that does not support e-mail editing.
This can also occur if Microsoft Office Outlook was started in Safe mode (achieved by pressing and holding the CTRL key while starting Outlook).
To work around this problem:
Start Outlook in normal mode.
-Or-
Configure Outlook to use the Outlook editor as the e-mail editor.
On the Outlook Tools menu, click Options.
On the Mail Format tab, set Use Microsoft Office Word to edit e-mail messages to unchecked and click OK.
-Or-
Reset Word (reboot may be needed or Detect and Repair should be run).
-Or-
Reinstall Word.
-Or-
Upgrade Word.
More information about this error message online.
So it happens just to one user? Does it happen to a lot of emails or just the one? It would seem the issue is of course in Word and not Outlook since winword.exe is what's having the error.
I assume you've repaired or reinstalled Word and rebooted since you got the error.

If it happens for a lot of emails, you could send him an email without sensitive info and post that.
One more question. Are Word and Outlook installed as part of the same Office suite or are they different?

it happens on any machine i open this message on.  All machines are the same.  yes i repaired and reinstalled and re-booted on 1 of the machines.  It happens also looks like if the message has the white box then it hangs word.  It is an office suite.
So it's just the one email? In that case I'll pick "The form is corrupt." from the list of options.
It's possible the form was created in a newer version and can't be opened in 2003 properly.

Do you have access to a machine with Word 2007 or 2010? You could ask the sender what version he used and if it has forms or something, you could ask that he save it in the 97/2003 format and resend it.
