Adding a computer to a new network

Hi, I just brought in my laptop to a new network area. I just picked up a network cable lying around and am trying to connect it to the internet. But I get the yellow triangle indicating no network address. I am running win7pro. IPConfig on a computer that is already connected to this network (can access internet) shows an IP of 10.0.0.55 woth 10.0.0.8 as the defaut gateway. Looked like a network with static IP addresses. So I tried assigning a static IP of 10.0.0.99 with the above gateway to my laptop, but its still not connecting to internet. What am I missing? How can I find if this network has been setup with a server or a router or anything else without asking for help? What do I need to add my computer to this network?

First thing is the network you are conneting to allow DHCP? If so, I would recommend that you allow to pickup a DHCP IP address. Disable your Wireless Network card as well. You could on the wrong  network IP Scheme
Just adding the computer to the network physically does not seem to connect it to the network. So I am assuming a dynamic DHCP IP assignment is not set-up.

Experts asking the right questions, but the network apparently has DHCP and assigns an IP automatically. So no need to do anything further from my side. Just had to reboot the laptop and wait.
