kvm over ip to one device without a kvm switch, exists?
looking to see if there exists a device that can be plugged into a computer/server/system using a usb/ps2 and vga connector... which then plugs into an rj45 network wire - that can be used to remotely control the device it's plugged into by using some client software belonging to said device
a few notes:
- not looking for a kvm dongle that requires a parent switch
- not looking to control 4/8/16 devices, just one
- thing that needs to be controlled is a DVR surveillance system and does NOT run windows
- device needs to be independent of the systems operating system
i saw this on ebay and it looked promising, but some more research leads me to believe it belongs to a parent/central switch:

Cat5 extenders are indeed what you are looking for, but they are not cheap. I use this one at home: http://www.smartvm.com/mini-cat5-kvm-extender-0dt23008a-230ft-p9756.htm If you want USB support as well as PS/2, it might be cheaper to get a separate USB extender http://www.smartvm.com/usb-extender-via-cat-5-extends-1-usb-device-including-keyboard-or-mouse-p7243.htm to go with the one I use.

Hmm I was hoping to find something that I can control from my laptop, is that what this is, or needs a dedicated keyb/mouse/monitor? Can't check links at the moment, but will soon
No, this device works without any intervening PC - you connect a keyboard, mouse and monitor to it on one end and the server/pc on the other end. If you want a laptop to control things, you are closer to a remote desktop solution, or if you want access at the BIOS level, an ILO device may be what you are looking for: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/remotemgmt.html

Yep, something closer to ilo but a standalone device... this dvr doesn't run a 'real' oparating system
I know planty of multi-kvm switches will do it, want to know if a single device exists

I used a few of these a while ago to allow me to place monitors, keyboards and mice in a class room but to keep the pcs in a remote office.
They run over cat5 (RJ45) type cables but not through switches - ie you need a direct wire not through a switch. They normally will run up to about 100 meters.
From memory you needed mains power at at least one end maybe both.
