VMWare Error on boot: INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
guys have a VMware ESX 4.0 update 2 box
rebooted it yesterday because i was moving it between sites. now when it boots i have problems.
the server itself seems to boot ok, I get to the screen where it displays the IP and gives you the Press ALT+F1 and ALT+F11 options. so visually it looks cool.
I can SSH to it from another PC no problem
but if i press ALT+F1 i get the follwoing
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT Id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: cannot execute /sbin/mingetty
INIT Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Anyone any idea? nothing was changed on the server that I'm aware of, All I know is prior to moving i was in Vsphere client and switched to maintenance mode then shut it down, packed it up and moved sites with it.

That looks like a storage fault, are you using Local Storage, SAN, External SCSI Enclosure?
Any errors on the disks or RAID Set in BIOS?
Any disks down in the array?
Any errors on the disks or RAID Set in BIOS?
Any disks down in the array?
Also try booting the server into troubleshooting mode, but try to establish if you have any issues with your storage.
If you moved the server double check all of your SCSI cable connections - both internal and external - and make sure they are seated good. It is likely something got knocked loose in the move.
Hope this helps

@hanccocka local storage
I'll double check the cabling now
@ alan white its not an IBM, its a dell but I'll check the disks and cables out anyway. reboot didnt solve it

ok resat all cables and cards and tried to enter trouble shoot mode and got the same error. so i'm thinking a possible faulty disk or something
Check you disks and RAID set any errors in POST?
ASKER
@hanccocka
no errors are displayed as it boots at all. I think I might get some diagnostic disks from Dell and test teh drives
