How to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 using a .DMG File

Hi All...

I have a MACBOOKPRO 17'' Intel.
The specs are

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz Processor
1GB 667MHZ RAM
120 GB HDD
256MB ATI Grafix Card.

I have a .DMG file of 6.31GB, which is an installation DVD of Snow Leopard 10.6 Operating System.

I am trying to install this on my Macbook PRO that is running 10.4.11 Tiger.
When i mount this image, it says the normal Installation Window. When Click on Install Mac OS X it asks me to restart. But after restart nothing happens.

I have tried using the Disk Utility, tried to restore from the source to My Disk. But it says it is not permitted.

Please help. Very Urgent

Thank You

Try burning the .dmg file onto a double sided DVD and see if that works. Quite frankly, the quickest and easiest solution is to run out to your nearest computer store and spend $29 and buy a 10.6 install DVD.
Just to correct the above, restore the image to a double sided DVD.

Your problem is that when your computer reboots, it is trying to boot from the Install DVD which, of course, it can't find.

I have burned the .DMG file to a Dual Layer DVD. And when i inserted this DVD in my Mac it opens up after Mounting and then the system restarts, but no response after restart.

I know that i can pay 29$ and buy the Mac OS X 10.6, but i am using this to train my users in my training center, so i need to complete this process. Any Help!!!
By restoring the image to a double sided DVD, will it copy the contents from the .dmg file to the DVD and can i make use of that DVD to Install the OS right??

Just i wanted to make sure before starting the process.. I have Dual Layer DVDs right now.
Use diskutility to restore the contents of the dmg file onto the dual layer Dvd. Once complete, open the Dvd and select install. The system should reboot and install the software.

You'll want to at least double your memory for good snow leopard performance.
Ok. I will try this and get back to you folks! Thank You very much!

Use Disk Utility to create a second partition on the drive or a thumb drive and install from there instead of using a DVD.
I restored the contents of the .dmg file to my "My Disk" and restarted the Mac. Now the Mac is stuck at the apple logo forever. I tried to Safe Boot but its not working either. This has gone from Bad to Worse, please help!!!! :-(
What is "My Disk"?
It is thel Hardrive of the Mac. Macintosh has named it My Disk from the day i bought it.
You can't restore the dmg to the hard drive. The dmg has to be restored to different media so that your computer can boot from the different media and install on the hard drive. You have in effect erased your hard drive and changed it into an install disk for another computer.

As set out above, what you needed to do is to restore the dmg file to a double sided DVD so you could boot from the DVD.

At this point, unless you have another Mac to use to restore the disk image to a DVD or a thumb drive, you are going to have to go out and buy an OS 10.6 install DVD and re-install your system from that.
strung is incorrect. You can create a new partition on the drive and restore the DMG to the new partition and then boot from the partition and install from there.

I have only one harddrive in this mac and it says that thi harddrive cannot be partitioned since it is a startup disk. can i try this way? can i restore it to the same disk and then burn the contents to a dvd. then i will delete from the disk. reboot and press alt. then choose dvd.  is it possible?
Do you have your original Tiger installation disk? See the link below.

Why jump through hoops by re-partitioning the drive and risking data loss when the simple solution is to create a boot DVD by restoring the DMG to a double sided DVD?
strung.. can u please explain me the step by step procedure to do restore to a double sided dvd?

ok. i will try this and get back to u folks, thank u very much for helping me a lot.... i will check this procedure now and reply tomorrow morning.
>>I restored the contents of the .dmg file to my "My Disk" and restarted the Mac.

What do you mean by restoring the content to your drive? If you used Disk Utility to restore, it will wipe everything on your drive to factory setting. Hope not.

Here is the manual for Snow Leopard install http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Snow_Leopard_Installation_Instructions.pdf

If you don't care about content of your drive, just boot into your DVD (try press C key down), and just double click on the Install Mac OS X icon.
If it didn't boot, then either your disc image was no good, or it was not a bootable image, or even not a generic snow leopard DVD installer disk. It'll be easier to buy one off Apple for $30.

Good luck!
@Strung - I have tried the link that you have given me.. If i already have an OS DVD i can do that image. But i have a .dmg which i want to burn the contents on a DVD. When i created as per the steps in the link that you have given as below.

1. Insert the DVD/CD - I Inserted the Blank DVD
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top)
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

This .cdr file is 0KB..

Now i am trying to mount that .DMG File and open DU, then Click on the left side "Mac OS Install DVD"
then Click New Image, select as DVD/CD Master. Save it in Documents. Then will Burn.. please tell if this will work..

@mac guru - As u said it did restore the contents. But after that i wasnt able to boot. So i did a fresh install of OS 10.4 and again trying to install snow leopard. Yes. It would be easy enough to buy the CD, but i will miss the things that i am learning, basically i have to teach and answer the silly questions of my students, so this way is real good.

Thank You
Hi All!... I have tried strung's method but in a different manner.. I have tried to burn the .cdr image created from the .dmg file that i copied to Documents Folder. Now i have Mac OS X 10.6 Install DVD in a proper way. I have installed it in a successful manner. Hence strung showed me the way to it. I am accepting his thread as solution.

Thank You
