Belkin router keeps going offline

I have 4 devices connected via ethernet to my Belkin wireless N Router.

One of the PC's on the home network keeps knocking out the network and I cant understand why it does that.  I need to manually log into the router and restart it.

Is anyone aware of any software or firewall issues on a PC which can take down a router?

The router has a secure password activated on there as well as the PSK encryption and having checked the DHCP settings, i am confident that this is not an external hack but the PC my son is using (he alternatves between using that ethernet cable for the PC and a Vonage VOIP device).

Thanks.

which model is it?
you can check this in goodle and if ther is any firmware update availbale? if yes then install it. you can do it through the belkin web interface. One thing you have to make sure is you should be connected via a wire while installing this firmware. Never try to do firwareupdate through wirelessly connected.
*google i mean :)

Leads me to believe that you possibly have a hardware issue

Nope, but a malfunctioning Network Interface Card can take a network down.

What you could do is update the firmware on the Belkin, monitor the network, if the issue continues, leave your sons computer offline for a couple of days to isolate the issue. You can also check his box for viruses and malware. What about torrent downloads, very possible he is sharing his downloads, etc.).

I'm pretty clued up when it comes to firmware etc, but there are no firmware updates for the router.  I'll have to check the model when I get home.

There's no P2P software installed on the PC, if anything, it would be me using p2p on my PC but no.   The desktop knocking out the PC is a Compaq (small black ones Pentium 5 maybe that are used by large corps).  DS something model.  Anyway, it has an inbuilt ethernet...like most PCs.

WPA/PSK is used as encryption.

router model is Belkin       F5D8231-4
no update?
what firmware are you at now?
2.01.27
how often this disconnection happends.
As you have DLS, how about DSL Modem? if you connect your PC straight to DSL modem instead of router, can you see such disconnections happening? same thing check with other PC. I think you should give a call to your Broadband provider and get a new DSL modem. your wireless router looks robust, model tells :)
I have established that the version 5.01.05 software upgrade is not for my router.  In fact that are 5 firmware version, but my router is a version 2, for which the latest update is the one that I have i.e. _2.01.27

softwaresoft - I've got a cable modem connected to the router.  The disconnection never happens when connected to the modem directlly and in any case, the whole network goes not, not one computer.  Broadband provider is irrelevant here, the problem is not the internet connection but the connection to the router.
so far from above discussion we found that
1. Router Firmware is up to date.
2. No virus/Antivirus stuff is causing it.
3. Nothing wrong with internet connection (dsl modem)
4. No p2p application in use on problem PC

here is another try. Try to check network card drivers of the problem PC. you said its HP sometihng DS model. Download the network drivers from internet by going to following link and put your model number there. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/siteHome?cc=us&lc=en

here, first we have to check that there is no physical problem with the cable or network card.
1. unisntall the network card and connect it with the Router. any disconnection. if there is discon, then it means some thing wrong with the Card or cable. could be short.
2. if you cant see disconnections, then try to install the newly downloaded drivers and test.

you can uninstall drivers from device manager. right click on My Computer> Manager> select Device manager from the left tree> Right click you NIC card and select Uninstall.
Problem has been resolved.  The router is faulty after many years of use.  Has been returned to Belkin and replaced with a newer model and I no longer have this problem.
