I'm at home so I can't give you a full masterpage but
Try to add this :
<div id="mycustompart">
<a href="www.microsoft.com">sample ms link</a>
<img src="./_layout/images/yourimage.gif"/>
</div>

I would suggest that you go thru this website (http://www.heathersolomon.com/blog/) and learn designing SharePoint Master Pages, the Best Practices way. This way you will avoid SharePoint compatibility and upgrade issues later on.

I would also recommend that you start from a Base Master Page (http://www.heathersolomon.com/blog/articles/basemasterpages.aspx) and work your way customizing the same. Don’t start from default.master which leads to major hiccups at a later stage.

You can install Sharepoint Designer...

depending on which master page your site is using.

Then just go in and modify the master page and put the image tag html
