Monitor blinking when connected to mini display port on DELL XPS L501X

I have been experiencing blinking and complete black outs on the mini-display port adapter to DVI on my Acer X191W monitor when connected to my new DELL XPS L501X laptop with a 64bit Windows 7 operating system.  I have tested the Samsung 2032BW monitor on my other  computer on this DELL XPS L501X laptop and the same thing happens.

Both of the monitors work fine on the other DELL PP29L laptop.

Any ideas on where to start looking for problems?

Do you have another mini display port adaptor?, I'm assuming that's being used to test both monitors? First thing I'd try to check is for a dud adaptor. The blinking thing sounds like a loose connector/wire. Second thing is drivers, but it's unlikely.
Had a customer monitor black out unrecoverably after going into hybernation it wouldn't wake on mouse. Took ages for it to dawn on me it actually was the monitor...brought it back to the shop, did the same thing on my machine. Maybe try that adaptor on another laptop and see if it happens again.
