Is there a way that I can be notified when a mirrored drive fails? I know I can llok in event viewer, but I would like something to alert me to this problem

There are probably other hardware/software events you might like to be notified.  You might look into one of the central monitoring packages.  They use snmp and event logs.  There are some free ones that are nice.  I've been using zenoss to watch 50 servers and it works pretty well.
Many mass storage devices have a web page interface and most will allow sending an email for admin problems, like a bad drive.

We get an email message on our netapps servers, snap servers, and buffalo terastations... Last year I had to archive over 100 Tb of data and every mass storage device I used always allowed for email notifications.
