simulate bandwidth conditions

im trying to see what the threshhold is for an app to work well under certain bandwidth conditions.  
im gig here at the office but i want to try different speeds associated with the internet to simulate vpns.
anybody no of a way to do this?

If you have VMware Workstation you can create network situations between two or more systems where you can specify for example the bandwidth as well as the "dependability" of the app by introducing packet loss.  I stand corrected but this functionality is in both versions 6.5 and 7 (cannot remember further back :-) )
